The Board of Directors of CSIRO has today announced that WEHI director Professor Doug Hilton AO has been appointed as the next Chief Executive of CSIRO.

In announcing the appointment, CSIRO Chair Kathryn Fagg AO referred to Prof Hilton as a much-respected researcher, leader and communicator of the better outcomes that science can deliver, highlighting his suitability for this critical role.
As one of the world’s largest mission-driven multidisciplinary science and research organisations, CSIRO plays an important role in delivering innovative scientific and technological solutions to national challenges.
The organisation’s work is critical in driving innovation, building a sustainable future, and ensuring that Australia remains globally competitive in an increasingly knowledge-based economy.
In March this year, WEHI president Jane Hemstritch AO announced that Prof Hilton would be stepping down from his role at WEHI, after almost four decades of unwavering dedication to the institute and 14 years as director.
“On behalf of WEHI, I wish Doug all the best for his exciting new role as CSIRO’s new Chief Executive,” she said.
“The WEHI community can rightly be proud of the impact and reputation of our institute, as well as our role in nurturing leaders who go on to make a difference on a national scale.”
Leadership transition
WEHI deputy director Professor Alan Cowman AC will take up the position of acting director on 1 September 2023.
“With more than 36 years of experience at WEHI, including six years as deputy director, Alan will provide excellent leadership to staff and students and will continue to be a source of wise counsel and expertise to the board,” Hemstritch said.
The WEHI Board is undertaking a global search for the institute’s new director, supported by Chief People Officer Elizabeth McMahon and international executive search firm, Perret Laver.
