The McGowan Government has announced a new award to recognise legal firms that provide pro bono legal services to members of the Western Australian community.
Attorney General John Quigley said it was important to recognise legal firms in Western Australia that provide a substantial amount of pro bono services for the public good.
Presented as part of WA Law Week in May, the three Law Awards will recognise an individual legal practitioner, a legal firm and a not-for-profit organisation that have provided outstanding pro bono legal services to the Western Australian community.
Margie Tannock was the 2019 individual winner. Ms Tannock was recognised for her work for the Western Australian community, including not-for-profit group Many Rivers and with YouthCARE.
The organisational winner last year was The Street Law Centre, which supports people who are homeless, or those at risk of becoming homeless, through the provision of specialised legal advice.
Nominations must be received by the Department of Justice by 2pm on Monday April 20, 2020.

“For the past 13 years, these awards have publicly acknowledged the best of the best – those individual lawyers and not-for-profit organisations who really walk the talk when it comes to pro bono work.
“Now for the first time, the awards will also recognise the pro bono work of legal firms.
“Pro bono represents a valuable resource that can be used to help improve access to justice.
“In Western Australia we are fortunate to have so many outstanding individuals, not-for-profit organisations and law firms providing pro bono legal assistance to members of our community.
“These awards are about recognising and thanking them for their important contribution.
“I encourage anyone who knows of an individual, legal firm or not-for-profit organisation which meets the criteria to put in a nomination.”
