New Bayswater Station designs to reflect community feedback

  • Updated artist impressions for new METRONET Bayswater Station released today
  • New designs include two upward escalators along with refined design aesthetic
  • Changes made following extensive community consultation to reflect local feedback
  • Seven METRONET projects now under construction creating thousands of jobs and opportunities for local businesses
  • Another four METRONET projects have now moved into procurement phase
  • Updated artist impressions for the new Bayswater Station have been released, with the project scope expanded to include two escalators and a fresh new design aesthetic.

The architecture of the station has been designed with both rail and natural heritage in mind, with the finishes designed to mimic the metal fluting on our trains while also reflecting the ripples on the nearby Swan River.

While the project designs initially included lifts and stairs, the project team were able to revise the station footprint to include one upward escalator on each of the two station platforms.

The escalators will run from the eastern entry building in one direction up to each island platform.

Community consultation on Bayswater Station has been the most extensive in the history of public transport projects in Western Australia, with online surveys, community events, briefings, presentations, enquiries and community reference groups on the station’s design.

The feedback obtained also led to tweaks to the architectural finishes of the design.

More colour, texture and streamlined shaping all have been incorporated into the finishes of the structure, as well as the design of the public spaces and landscaping.

This year alone the McGowan Government has seven METRONET projects under construction and another four METRONET projects moving into the procurement phase.

As stated by Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:

“Today’s new designs reflect the feedback provided by the Bayswater community.

“The new designs are a great outcome for the local community and public transport users, drawing on both local rail heritage and the natural world that surrounds it.

“This has been one of the most extensive consultations for a public transport project in Western Australia with thousands of people having their say on what they would like to see at the new station.

“Bayswater Station is set to become a major transport hub, linking the future Airport Line and the Morley-Ellenbrook Line to the Midland Line and the wider rail network, while also creating a hub of activity.

“This year alone we have seven METRONET projects under construction with another four METRONET projects now in the procurement phase.

“Our METRONET program is Building for Tomorrow, securing the infrastructure needed for our future while also supporting the Western Australian economy through the COVID-19 pandemic.”

As stated by Maylands MLA Lisa Baker:

“The new Bayswater Station is at the heart of the town and the first major METRONET project that can deliver good transport-oriented design.

“I’m particularly excited about opportunities for community activation in the new public spaces around the new station.

“I have a very engaged and educated community who have been active in working with the Government to get the very best outcomes in design and development for our village.

“With the art and landscaping treatments still to come, the McGowan Government is responding to community feedback and I believe the current designs reflect the heritage character of Bayswater.”
