Last week library staff made a very special visit to Bellbrook Public School to deliver three books for each student as part of the Books in Homes program.
Each term students choose their own books. They also have a book read to them by a reading role model.
Melanie Webb, Children’s Librarian was the reading role model this term and presented each student their books, giving a short talk aimed to inspire a love of reading and learning.
‘My talk was about how as a child I struggled with reading until my school librarian suggested I read Harry Potter. I loved it and this inspired my love of reading ever since,’ Ms Webb said.
‘Books can open your eyes to other places in the world. The students showed a great interest in my story about travelling to some of the places mentioned in the Harry Potter books.
The Books in Homes program is a charitable foundation that supports the development of reading skills by providing books to students in remote or disadvantaged areas.
The program has been established for over 20 years and over that time has distributed 2.8 million new books to children in Australia.
‘The kids were absolutely thrilled with their books and started reading straight away. We sat with different groups of students and read to them. It was lovely,’ Ms Webb added.
The visit was part of the regular mobile library visit to Bellbrook School that happens each fortnight.
