A new campaign promoting Western Australian screen industry career pathways was launched today by the Cook Labor Government at the Perth Film Studios Careers Day.
The Careers in Screen Campaign aims to drive growth in WA’s screen industry workforce by creating greater visibility of education and training pathways and raising awareness about the breadth of careers in screen and encouraging people to pursue those opportunities.
The new campaign is part of theWA Screen Industry Workforce Development Strategy: 2026-2034which is supported by $11.2 million in funding over four years to accelerate growth in WA’s screen industry workforce, skills and industry capacity.
A Creative Careers website and WA Careers in Screen Guide identifying the variety of pathways into the industry, outlining the diversity of roles and promoting training and skills development opportunities, will be key components of the awareness campaign.
Coinciding with the Perth Film Studios Careers Day, the campaign launch will initially target Secondary students considering VET and tertiary training programs in the coming years, as well as tertiary and TAFE students and graduates considering entering the industry.
The diverse range of career pathways being promoted includes creative roles as well as trades such as electricians, riggers and carpenters, production office needs in finance, accounting and HR, as well as events, logistics, management and leadership skills.
The dedicated website and guide, which will bring together various resources and links to provide a centralised point of access to a range of resources for people considering a career in the industry, will be delivered in partnership with Creative Industries Training Council FutureNow with input from Screenwest, education and training providers and Perth Film Studios.
Careers in Screen also supports the Cook Labor Government’s Made in WA initiative, by creating secure regional and metropolitan jobs and diversifying the State’s economy by boosting skills and training.
As stated by Creative Industries Minister Simone McGurk:
“With the Perth Film Studio now open for business we are building pathways to meet the increasing production demands of WA’s screen industry and support the State’s growing pipeline of productions.
“Under the WA Screen Industry Strategy, the Cook Labor Government has committed $11.2 million over four years to build the workforce and industry capacity required to support major productions attracted to our State.
“There is a breadth of careers in screen, and we want to provide opportunities for Western Australians to be part of this growing local industry.
“Careers in Screen will encourage students and recent graduates to develop skills and pursue careers in our local screen industry and play a part in the development of the future creative content and stories that will entertain audiences around the world.”
As stated by Skills and Training Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson:
“I want Western Australians to be skilled up and ready to take on the opportunities of our growing screen industry.
“These are interesting, quality jobs in a sector that is helping to diversify the local economy.
“That’s why the Cook Labor Government is investing heavily in skills and training – so locals can be the stars of a film industry that’s Made In WA.”
As stated by West Swan MLA Rita Saffioti:
“The Perth Film Studios are an incredible asset for our State that will diversify our economy and unlock exciting new career opportunities for Western Australians.
“This campaign is about putting a spotlight on the many training and career pathways already available in WA for young people wanting to pursue their dreams in the screen industry.
“Supporting more Western Australians to develop their skills locally will ensure we have the workforce needed for our State to become a go-to destination for global screen production.”
