New crossing in Highton

A new raised crossing on Burdekin Drive in Highton is providing a safer crossing for school children and the community.

The City of Greater Geelong received a TAC Local Government Grant which funded 50 percent of this important road safety project, with the City contributing the remaining 50 percent.

The new raised school crossing is designed to align with Safe System principles which recognises road safety is a shared responsibility.

By slowing speeds, making roads safer and making people safe this project will help us work towards our vision zero goal.

Australian governments have committed to a vision of zero deaths and serious injuries by 2050 (Vision Zero).

Mayor Trent Sullivan

The City has identified speeding drivers through the area as well as dangerous drive throughs at the school crossing.

This treatment slows vehicle speeds down through the area and makes the crossing supervisor and school children more prominent with a shorter distance to cross the road.

Upgrading our school crossing infrastructure is an important safety feature to help our community travel to and from school.

Councillor Ron Nelson – Transport portfolio chair

With data showing an increase in school crossing drive throughs, we urge motorists to be mindful of their surroundings.

Council is committed to making our roads and footpaths safer for all users.

Our crossing supervisors help minimise risk, however drivers must also play their part to protect our most vulnerable community members. Everyone has a part to play in keeping ourselves and each other safe on the roads.
