  • Footbridge will provide thousands of residents with access to the new Malaga Station
  • Malaga Station being delivered as part of the METRONET Morley-Ellenbrook Line
  • Station construction ramping up with roofing being installed on upper level

The Cook Government has today released the designs of a new footbridge over Tonkin Highway that will provide thousands of residents in Malaga, Ballajura and surrounding suburbs with access to the new METRONET Malaga Train Station.

The arch footbridge will provide access for pedestrians and cyclists from the residential areas west of Tonkin Highway.

The footbridge will be seven-metres above ground level at the highest point, and span 90-metres across Tonkin Highway.

The new footbridge can be accessed from the shared path along Tonkin Highway and will connect to the new shared path being built along the METRONET Morley-Ellenbrook Train Line.

The release of the new designs comes as work ramps up on the new Malaga Station, with roofing being installed on the upper level of the station, and more than 600-tonnes of structural steel installed to date.

Substantial progress is also being made on other sections of the METRONET Morley-Ellenbrook Line including:

  • Morley Train Station: eight of 53 vertical columns for the multi-storey car park now completed;
  • Noranda: work continues with service installation, earthworks and concrete pours;
  • Whiteman Park: beams to support the elevated rail structure now being installed; and
  • Ellenbrook Station: the roof of the station and 12-stand bus interchange have been fully installed, with solar panels on the bus interchange.

The METRONET Morley-Ellenbrook Train Line is jointly funded by the Federal and State Governments.

As stated by Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:

“It’s fantastic to see the new Malaga Station taking shape and to see the designs of the new footbridge over Tonkin Highway.

“The new footbridge will be critical for the thousands of residents living on the western side of Tonkin Highway, providing them with a safe access route to the new station.

“Right across the METRONET Morley-Ellenbrook Train Line, works are ramping up and people can really see this new train line taking shape.

“The new 21-kilometre line will provide new transport options for Perth’s north-east suburbs and slash travel times with five new stations between Bayswater and Ellenbrook.”
