New guide launched to support foster and family carers in WA

  • Who Can Say OK in WA? guide launched during Foster Carers Week 2023
  • Guide simplifies and clarifies who can make decisions regarding children in care
  • Foster Carer Week 2023 runs from Monday 31 July to Sunday 6 August

A new guide to assist foster and family carers with everyday decision making about a child or young person in care has been launched today by the Child Protection Minister.

The Who Can Say OK in WA? resource was released at the Foster Care Association of Western Australia’s Foster and Family Carer’s Week celebration.

The Guide includes topics faced by most families including household rules, sleepovers and mobile phone use, as well as issues more commonly faced in an out of home care arrangement.

The resource is for all foster and family carers in Western Australia and was developed in consultation with sector stakeholders.

Who Can Say OK in WA? implements a recommendation from the Foster Care Refresh Project to develop a carer specific resource that provides clarity about who makes everyday decisions about children in care.

The Department of Communities, community sector organisations and Aboriginal community-controlled organisations work together with family and foster carers to support decision making that centres on the voices and best interests of children in care.

As stated by Child Protection Minister Sabine Winton:

“I am pleased to launch Who Can Say OK in WA? during Foster Carer Week 2023.

“Foster carers are frequently presented with everyday decisions that all families make about children and young people and these guidelines will support carers with this process.

“It is so important that carers feel confident and supported about which decisions they can make, so that childhood experiences for children in care are as normalised as possible.”
