New opportunities for youth to volunteer

Orange Council

The launch of a new Youth Volunteer Program will be one of the highlights of Volunteer Week in Orange.

The annual celebration of volunteers, to be held from Monday 15 to Sunday 21 May 2023, will also include a Council-hosted morning tea to thank the many local residents who give their time to support local services.

Orange City Council Services Policy Committee Chair, Cr Mel McDonell said many Council community services would not be possible without the work of volunteers.

“This week of celebration aims to acknowledge the vital support that volunteers provide to organisations and communities. The theme this year is to recognise volunteers as Change Makers, and they certainly deliver that across Council’s agencies,” Cr Mel McDonell said.

The new Youth Volunteer Program aims to provide practical support to local charities and non-government organisations by encouraging local young people, aged from 15 to 24, to take on volunteer work.

“I am thrilled about the new Youth Volunteer Program”, Cr Mel McDonell said.

“This program is the perfect opportunity for young people to discover the benefits of giving back to the community through volunteering. It could also help to build valuable skills that will help them kick-start their careers, build work experience and grow relationships with other young people.”

For Volunteer Week, Orange City Council will be hosting a morning tea for volunteers and to thank them their work.

The event will be held on Wednesday 17 May at the Skylight Room, Orange City Bowling Club, to acknowledge volunteers who are part of Orange City Council.

“Orange City Council is always looking for volunteers to provide support in local community programs. It is a good way to meet people and enjoy the sense of pride and accomplishment that comes with being active in your community,” Cr Mel McDonell said.

Orange City Council offers a range of opportunities for volunteering, including the Library,

Botanic Garden, Museum, Theatre, Migrant Support Service, and Aging Services group.

Council also coordinates social support programs such as Meals on Wheels and Migrant Social Support.
