New park for community to gather, play and relax

A new community park has opened in South Morang creating a central hub of the Plenty Valley Town Centre.

Opening Pipe Track Park on Thursday Mayor Emilia Lisa Sterjova said it was a space for the community to gather, play and relax.

“Pipe Track Park will be the heart of the Plenty Valley Town Centre,” Cr Sterjova said.

“This open space is an important asset for the town centre which is seeing more and more residents moving into the area.

“In a few years this park will be a part of a vibrant civic hub, connected by cycling and walking tracks, public transport and surrounded by homes and businesses.”

Pipe Track Park, located at 370 McDonalds Road South Morang, was built by Canopi Projects on Melbourne Water land.

Melbourne Water’s Heritage Services Coordinator Paul Balassone is thrilled that future generations of the community will have the opportunity to learn about the park’s historical significance.

“The Yan Yean story is very much part of Melbourne’s story. Yan Yean is much more than a water supply system. It’s been a place of work for generations and, for some, a place they called home,” Mr Balassone said.

“Pipe Track Park pays homage to this past, bringing to life the stories of the past in the present and for the future through interpretive signage.

“This project supports two of Melbourne Water’s key liveability outcomes – a sense of place and a sense of community. We’re thrilled to be able to collaborate with the City of Whittlesea and Canopi Projects to bring our past to life.”

The park includes a shared path which connects to the Mernda Rail corridor.

The park supports The City of Whittlesea’s vision of A place for all by providing quality open spaces, creating well-designed neighbourhoods and vibrant town centres for the growing community.
