New partnership strengthens safety for communities near NSW Dams

Response coordination and information sharing capabilities will be improved by a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) formalising an already strong working relationship between the two agencies.

The agreement will ensure intelligence relating to the safety of declared dams is shared timely and accurately, including all dam emergency plans supporting preparedness, response and community safety activities.

The MOU was signed by NSW SES and Dams Safety NSW in May 2026.

Commissioner Wassing said the partnership reinforced a shared commitment to protecting lives, property and the environment.

“While dam failures are extremely rare, the consequences can be significant, which is why strong planning, collaboration and information sharing is so important,” Commissioner Wassing said.

“This agreement ensures NSW SES has access to the latest dam safety information, helping us make informed decisions and maintain a high level of preparedness for any dam-related emergency.

“By working together, we’re strengthening our ability to protect communities and respond quickly and effectively when it matters most.

The MOU establishes a clear framework for cooperation between agencies, including information sharing, planning, training and community engagement initiatives.

Dams Safety NSW is the independent NSW Government regulator responsible for ensuring dam owners manage the safety of declared dams in the state.

With NSW SES the lead agency for floods, the two agencies play a pivotal role in protecting communities, infrastructure and the environment during dam-related emergencies.

Dams Safety NSW Chief Executive Officer Ashraf El-Sherbini said DSNSW is committed to supporting emergency preparedness activities across the state.

“By working together and ensuring timely access to dam safety intelligence and emergency plans, we are enhancing our collective ability to manage risk, support informed decision-making and help protect lives, property and the environment,” he said.
