Community members are encouraged to share their thoughts on proposed safety crossings in Olinda and Sassafras.

As part of the ngurrak barring | RidgeWalk trail, Council is planning to upgrade several pedestrian crossings and footpaths in the Hills.

Over the past few months, Council has been working with schools, businesses, and other key stakeholders to prepare proposed designs for these crossings.

Streeton Ward Councillor, Andrew Fullagar, said the proposed pedestrian crossings would be in the heart of Sassafras and Olinda, “on Mount Dandenong Tourist Road, Mountain Highway and Olinda-Monbulk Road.”

“Council has worked closely with schools, businesses, emergency services and the Department of Transport and Planning (formerly VicRoads) over the past few months to understand their needs and aspirations. Now, we want to hear from you!”

“Your feedback will help inform the design and shape the future of Olinda and Sassafras.”

“These are major roads bisecting our beautiful villages. Crossings would allow safer movement for pedestrians of all ages and abilities. We seek feedback from the community to ensure we secure the best possible solutions with regards to safety, any impacts on parking, and traffic congestion.”

“We want to make our towns pedestrian-friendly, and we know that crossings encourage safer speeds and prioritise pedestrian safety.”

“We’ve considered options such as roundabouts and signalised intersections, however, these require a large amount of space and removal of on-street parking. I think these crossings will make daily life easier for both pedestrians and drivers, and I look forward to hearing from our community members about the proposal.”

Community can provide feedback on the proposed designs plan until 25 October 2023.
