A major upgrade to the immersive Reef Life Explorer platform is giving marine managers, scientists and the public an unprecedented window into the health of reefs inside marine protected areas (MPAs), allowing users to explore decades of ecological change across protected reefs in Australia and worldwide.
The upgrade brings together one of the world’s largest collections of independent underwater reef monitoring data into a single interactive tool. It was developed by researchers from the University of Tasmania’s Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS), working with Parks Australia and Reef Life Survey.
For the first time, users can directly compare ecological trends inside and outside protected areas using a standardised approach, revealing how reef ecosystems respond to protection over time.
The release comes at a critical moment for global ocean conservation. Nations, including Australia, have committed to protecting 30% of the world’s oceans by 2030 under the Global Biodiversity Framework. Yet understanding whether those protections are delivering real biodiversity outcomes remains a major challenge.

“Shallow reefs worldwide are under increasing pressure from fishing, ocean warming, harmful algal blooms and other human impacts,” said IMAS researcher, Ella Clausius, who led the project upgrade.
“Marine protected areas are one of our most important tools for conserving marine life, but we can’t manage what we can’t measure.”
“Long-term monitoring is essential for understanding how ecosystems are changing underwater and identifying which management approaches are delivering the greatest benefits for biodiversity, allowing us to continually improve the effectiveness of marine conservation over time.”
Australia is recognised as a global leader in ocean protection, with more than half of its Exclusive Economic Zone designated as marine protected areas. The new platform allows users to examine ecological trends across the Australian Marine Parks network and compare them with state-managed and international protected areas.

A key addition is the new Marine Protected Area Time Series Layer, which displays long-term ecological data collected from reefs monitored through time, with some sites surveyed continuously since the 1990s. Users can explore changes in reef condition at multiple scales, from individual protected areas through to regional, national and global trends.
“The Reef Life Explorer tool gives us a national view of ecological changes occurring across our marine parks, allowing our marine park managers to identify trends and respond more quickly to emerging issues,” said Parks Australia Branch Head, Marine and Island Parks, Shaun Barclay.
“For the first time, we can see in one-place long-term ecological trends across reefs spanning whole networks and see where ecosystems are improving or where they may need additional management attention.”
“These insights help us make more informed management decisions and evaluate whether conservation measures are delivering positive outcomes for reef communities.”

The platform draws on more than 36,000 underwater surveys conducted across 4,800 shallow reef sites worldwide, representing one of the most comprehensive standardised datasets ever assembled for shallow reefs.
The upgraded platform also provides insights into 21 ecological indicators, including populations of sharks and rays, crown-of-thorns starfish, sea urchins and other species of conservation concern.
“By making reef monitoring data publicly accessible, Reef Life Explorer gives managers, scientists and the community the information they need to understand how protected and unprotected reefs are changing through time, helping ensure marine protected areas are managed using the best available evidence,” said IMAS marine ecologist, Professor Rick Stuart-Smith, who co-founded the Reef Life Survey program and the Reef Life Explorer platform.
“Reef Life Explorer is a living resource that will continue to grow as new monitoring data are collected through Reef Life Survey, Australia’s National Reef Monitoring Network and partner programs around the world.”
This project builds on more than 30 years of marine protected area and reef ecology research led by the Centre for Ecology and Biodiversity at the University of Tasmania’s Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS).
Reef Life Survey (RLS) provides large-scale reef monitoring by training experienced recreational divers in rigorous scientific methods, delivering high-quality ecological data at global scale. IMAS continues to support and manage the RLS dataset.
Parks Australia manages 60 Australian Marine Parks covering 43% of Australian waters. The products and outputs from RLS, including the establishment of national shallow reef baselines within marine parks, help inform marine park managers and stakeholders about marine life and if there are changes occurring over time.
The Reef Life Explorer platform integrates biodiversity data from the Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS) with global marine protection data from ProtectedSeas , aligning reef condition with conservation status.
