New service to recycle tricky household items

MPSLogo_News.jpg

Mornington Peninsula Shire has committed to sending zero waste to landfill by 2030.

We’re now introducing a new and free recycling service for those hard-to-recycle objects that can’t go in your kerbside recycling bins.

The new recovery stations will be located at Mornington, Rosebud and Hastings and Somerville libraries. All residents are encouraged to take advantage of our new recovery stations during library opening hours.

The following items can be disposed of free of charge:

  • cables
  • mobile phones and cameras
  • DVDs, CDs, floppy disks and cases
  • videos, cassettes and cases
  • x-rays
  • light globes
  • fluorescent tubes.

What happens to the items?

The recycled items will be collected by social enterprise Green Collect and taken to their facility in Braybook to start their transformation journey.

Green Collect are dedicated to keeping these items out of landfill and within the circular economy through reuse, remake, and recycle. 60 per cent of Items get re-used and 35 per cent of items are dismantled into materials for recycling.

The new stations are designed to accept household amounts only and cannot accommodate large quantities. Please take large quantities and bulkier items to our Resource Recovery Centres.

Quote attributable to Mayor Councillor Anthony Marsh:

“I’m sure a lot of us have many of these objects at home, not knowing how to dispose of them correctly. Instead of becoming landfill, these items will get a new lease on life and contribute to a circular economy!”
