Minister for Communities and Housing, Minister for Digital Economy and Minister for the Arts The Honourable Leeanne Enoch

Construction has been completed on a contemporary new social housing unit complex in Cleveland, with tenants to be selected and begin moving in within weeks.

Minister for Communities and Housing, Minister for Digital Economy and Minister for the Arts, Leeanne Enoch today inspected the new $5.3 million complex and received the handover of the property from construction company Bedford Built Pty Ltd.

“This new complex consists of 11 one-bedroom units and six two-bedroom units, which will soon become home to more than 17 tenants,” Ms Enoch said.

“Now that the handover has been completed, allocations will soon begin, and tenants could be calling these units home within weeks.

“These units have been designed with accessibility in mind to make them suitable for people with disability and older tenants, with three units at a platinum standard of design and 14 at a gold standard of design according to Livability Housing Design standards.

“Not only does this complex provide a boost to social housing stock in the local area, it has also provided a boost to the local economy, supporting approximately 17 full-time equivalent jobs during construction.”

The Palaszczuk Government has invested $5.3 million funding in this social housing complex as a part of the Queensland Housing Strategy 2017 – 2027.

Ms Enoch said The Queensland Government is investing $2.9 billion, including the establishment of a $1 billion Housing Investment Fund, under the Queensland Housing and Homelessness Action Plan 2021–2025.

“This is the largest concentrated investment in social housing in Queensland’s history and will see the commencement of 10,000 new homes over the life of the Housing Strategy.

“This investment will support better long-term housing outcomes and move more vulnerable Queenslanders into safe, secure and affordable housing, sooner,” Ms Enoch said.

“Through QuickStarts Qld, a component of the QHIGI, construction on an additional 71 new social housing homes will be commenced in the Redlands region through a planned investment of $20.3 million over the next four years.

“This will support more than 64 full-time equivalent construction jobs.

“This in addition to the 54 new social homes already commenced in the Redlands region under the Queensland Housing Strategy 2017-2027.”
