The Cook Labor Government has welcomed environmental scientist Dr Renee Young as Chair of the Soil and Land Conservation Council.

The Council supports broader efforts to protect and restore Western Australia’s soil and land resources for future generations, by providing advice on policy, management, and conservation.

Dr Young brings a substantial knowledge of Council’s advisory role on soil and land conservation in WA, having contributed as a member on the Council since October 2022.

She replaces outgoing Chair Dr Hayley Norman, who has held the position since September 2020.

Since its re-establishment in October 2019, the Council has provided high-quality, evidence-based advice on a range of soil and land management issues, including the WA Soil Health Strategy, salinity, and sustainable agricultural and pastoral practices.

As stated by Agriculture and Food and Fisheries Minister Jackie Jarvis:

“Dr Young is a highly respected environmental scientist with extensive experience turning research into practical outcomes for agriculture, industry, and the environment.

“Dr Young’s experience on the Council will provide valuable insight as it continues to advise government on the sustainable management and conservation of Western Australia’s soil and land resources.

“I would also like to acknowledge and thank Dr Norman for her leadership, commitment, and contribution during her tenure as Chair.”
