New Southern Remand Centre on track

Elise Archer,Attorney-General

Construction of the new Southern Remand Centre at Risdon is set to begin in March with Hansen Yuncken announced as the managing contractor for the project.

Hansen Yuncken has a proven track record in building Tasmanian infrastructure and have been operating in the State since 1937, making them the ideal contractor to oversee construction on the $70 million, 140 bed facility.

Early works for the project, including fencing, temporary roadworks and levelling of the site were recently completed by Hazell Brothers.

With completion expected by the end of 2021, the Southern Remand Centre will significantly increase the capacity of Tasmania’s prison system and provide better conditions for remandees, allowing separation from the general prison population.

The Hodgman majority Liberal Government is addressing the challenges within the State’s Prison Service, committing $350 million towards fixing ageing prison infrastructure and increasing capacity for the future. This significant and crucial investment will make our communities safer.

We are committed to keeping Tasmanians safe and strengthening the economy, with more than 130 jobs expected to be created during construction of the Southern Remand Centre and 50 ongoing jobs created once fully operational.
