The former Bunnings Warehouse site is set to be transformed following Rockhampton Regional Council’s development approval for the construction of a new shopping centre and twelve townhouses.
Stage one of the development includes a Coles supermarket, amenities and Liquorland store. Stage two includes speciality stores and outdoor seating, followed by an extension to the shopping centre with additional speciality stores and showroom as part of stage three.
The final stage will see twelve four-bedroom townhouses constructed separate to the supermarket at the rear of the site which will be accessed via Potts Street.
Rockhampton Mayor Tony Williams said the development was a vote of confidence in the region’s economy and bolstered Rockhampton’s retail and housing sectors.
“Today’s development approval is an important step towards seeing the former Bunnings site rejuvenated,” Mayor Williams said.
“We’re seeing some real momentum in our economy with Gross Regional Product growing more in the past two years than it grew in the eight years beforehand.
“This announcement will not only bring new jobs to the region but will also provide additional and diverse housing opportunities which is a good outcome for local residents and business alike.”
Councillor Grant Mathers who holds the Planning and Regulation portfolio said the former 8000 square metre Bunnings Warehouse building will be demolished and redeveloped.
“Under the Planning Act, the developer, Coles Group Limited would be required to commence all four stages within a six year period which would begin with the demolition of the existing building,” Cr Mathers said.
“The plans include landscaping across the entire site and acoustic fencing which will act as a buffer between the supermarket, neighbouring properties and the townhouses.
“In light of the current housing crisis, the inclusion of townhouses in this development becomes even more crucial, so this proposal really is a win-win scenario to cater for the growth of our Region.”
