New weapons in fight against Cancer

Will Hodgman,Premier

The Tasmanian Liberal Government is focused on continuing to deliver our plan to build a better health system for all Tasmanians.

This is why we, along with the Morrison Government through the Commonwealth Radiation Oncology Health Program Grants, are pleased to announce today awarded tenders for more than $28 million to upgrade the State’s ageing oncology equipment.

We will be installing four new Linear Accelerators – two for the WP Holman Clinic at the Launceston General Hospital and two for the WP Holman Clinic at the Royal Hobart Hospital.

Linear accelerators provide image-guided radiotherapy with high precision to treat tumours and lesions in various parts of the body, including lungs, breasts, head and neck.

This capital equipment project also includes a statewide treatment planning system for radiation therapy. The treatment system enables modern radiation therapy planning for all kinds of treatment and will result in improved planning and efficiency.

The WP Holman Clinic in both Hobart and Launceston will each get a new CT simulator.

Successful companies include:

  • TrueBeam Linear Accelerators – Varian Medical Systems
  • Eclipse Treatment Planning System – Varian Medical Systems
  • LB Aquilion CT – Simulators – Canon Pty Ltd

It is anticipated delivery of the new equipment will commence in 2020.

The Tasmanian Liberal Government and the Morrison Government are committed to improving health outcomes for all Tasmanians and these investments will go a long way to making life easier for both staff and patients.
