Newman residents are a step closer to benefiting from a brand new, purpose-built hospital and healthcare hub, as construction of the new health service continues.
The $61.4 million Newman Health Service, includes a $15 million contribution from BHP Iron Ore (BHP) and will include six emergency bays, 12 inpatient beds, an outpatient centre, medical imaging, purpose-built GP consultation spaces and two dental chairs.
The McGowan Government is delivering modern health services for the people of regional Western Australia.
When complete, the Newman community’s most important health services, including occupational health, physiotherapy and mental health, will be located under one roof with the brand new hospital.
The main construction phase is progressing well with the completion of the foundation and the installation of 240 tonnes of structural steel underway.
The new facility is being built next to the existing hospital to ensure minimal disruption to patients, staff and the community. It will also be conveniently located across the road from the Puntukurnu Aboriginal Medical Service Clinic which opened last year, creating a health precinct.
Stage one of the redevelopment comprises of the emergency department and inpatient beds, and is on track to be completed in 2022.
The completed facility is expected to be open to the community in 2023.

“The Newman Health Service will be a fit-for-purpose, brand new hospital and health centre where the local community can access care closer to home and on country.
“The capacity for treating critically ill and injured patients will expand to have two resuscitation bays, three treatment bays and a procedural room.
“The Newman Health Service will be a modern and attractive workplace to help us continue to attract and retain the best and brightest clinicians to regional Western Australia.”
As stated by Pilbara MLA Kevin Michel:
“This project will modernise local health facilities and create local jobs during construction.
“The hospital will be telehealth-enabled throughout, for 24/7 access to emergency and other specialists and include state-of-the-art ICT to ensure capacity in a rapidly evolving digital healthcare environment.”
