Bass Coast Shire Council’s Draft Wonthaggi Activity Centre Plan has been developed to establish a vision for Wonthaggi for the next 20 years and to reinforce Wonthaggi’s role as a regional centre.
In response to community feedback, Council has decided to begin the Apex Park Implementation Plan and progress the master planning of the former Secondary College site.
Council will also investigate design options to improve pedestrian safety at the intersection of Murray Street and Biggs Drive and complete a Wonthaggi Access and Movement Study.
Bass Coast Shire Mayor, Cr Brett Tessari said that during the consultation process for the Plan, over 70 responses were received.
“These responses indicated strong support for works at Apex Park and the need to do further work on car parking and pedestrian safety,” Cr Tessari said.
“Completing an Access and Movement Study and getting started on improvements to Apex Park and the master plan for the former College Campus is fantastic news for the community.
“The Apex Park Implementation Plan will include preparing a landscaping master plan, construction of a new playspace, investigating options for the open drain behind Woolworths and making missing pathways connections.
“In order to address community concerns about pedestrian safety, car parking and transport, Council will carry out a movement study of the Wonthaggi township.
“We will also investigate design options for improving pedestrian safety at the Murray Street and Biggs Drive intersection, something that is really important for our entire community,” Cr Tessari concluded.
Once this work has been done, a revised version of the Wonthaggi Activity Centre Plan will be presented to Council for adoption, alongside the Access and Movement Study and the Secondary College Master Plan.
