Nightcliff’s unique coastal flora has been brought to life in a new public artwork by Garamilla (Darwin)-based artist Katie Hagebols aka Piper Kidd, with the Flora of Nightcliff Streets mural transforming Aralia Street into a vibrant celebration of the suburb’s natural character.
Delivered in partnership with the Darwin Street Art Festival, City of Darwin is proud to have supported this local artist to extend their work in this vital precinct.
Lord Mayor Peter Styles said the mural demonstrates how public art can celebrate Darwin’s unique identity while creating more welcoming and engaging public spaces.
“Flora of Nightcliff Streets is a wonderful example of how public art can tell the story of a place while making our streets more vibrant and inviting,” Mr Styles said.
“Drawing inspiration from Nightcliff’s unique coastal flora, this mural celebrates the suburb’s natural beauty and distinctive coastal character, creating a lasting artwork for the whole community to enjoy.
“Projects such as this support our local creative community while strengthening neighbourhood identity and contributing to a more liveable, creative and connected Darwin,” he said.
Katie Hagebols is known for her bold use of colour and expressive style, creating works that explore landscape, identity and connection to Country.
Growing up on Waddawurrung Country before making the Territory her home, Katie draws inspiration from the Territory’s remarkable landscapes, culture and the stories that connect people to place.
The Flora of Nightcliff Streets mural draws on the native coastal flora found throughout Nightcliff, transforming familiar local species into a striking visual artwork that celebrates the suburb’s identity.
The mural is one of a growing number of public artworks delivered through City of Darwin’s Creative Strategy 2024-2030, supporting local artists while creating distinctive public spaces that celebrate Darwin’s unique character.
