Council elections will take place during October and November this year.
Unlike State and Federal elections, it is not compulsory to vote in South Australian Council elections. However, Council elections are the biggest single voluntary civic participation activity in the state, with nearly 400,000 people voting in the previous elections in 2018. Voting gives you a say about who will represent your interests as an Elected Member. It is the best way to have your say about what happens in your local community.
Nominate for Council
Nominations for a position on Council will open on 23 August. As an Elected Member, you will have the opportunity to influence Council strategy and create long-term, positive outcomes for your community. The role is both rewarding and challenging. It requires commitment, responsibility and accountability. With very few exceptions (such as if you are an undischarged bankrupt or if you are disqualified from holding office by a court order), you can nominate for a position on Council regardless of your qualifications, religion, race, gender, experience or profession. We actively encourage nominations from people from diverse backgrounds to ensure that a wide range of views are represented.
We are holding Candidate Briefing sessions for anyone who is thinking about nominating to become an Elected Member. There is no need to book- just come along.
