North West land ready for affordable homes

Michael Ferguson,Minister for State Development, Construction and Housing

The Tasmanian Liberal Government is increasing social and affordable housing and releasing land for residential development.

North-West coasters eligible for affordable housing assistance will get the first chance to buy the first lots released for sale at two new subdivisions from today.

Lots at Kentish Drive, Shorewell Park and 28 Bowick Street, Wynyard will be prioritised for affordable housing sales for 30 days from today after which time unsold lots will be available on the open market.

Sale of Kentish Drive lots will include land title and sale of Bowick Street lots will be subject to title release.

Around half of the lots at the Kentish Drive, Shorewell Park and 28 Bowick Street, Wynyard subdivisions are available for sale with the remaining lots to go on the market in May.

Lots at a third subdivision at Hales Street, Wynyard will also go on sale in coming weeks.

Construction of all three subdivisions are expected to be completed by July 2022.

Home ownership assistance is available under the Tasmanian Liberal Government’s HomeShare program which provides assistance to Tasmanians on low to moderate incomes. It works by reducing the cost of buying a house, as well as reducing the monthly cost of owning it.

Under the scheme eligible home buyers share the cost of buying their home with the Director of Housing.

We are making changes to our HomeShare program so that more Tasmanians will be able to buy their own home.

From 1 July 2022, the Housing Market Entry Program will provide more shared equity products that will make it easier to save for a deposit and make loan repayments more affordable.

New land release projects will deliver a total of 116 lots with 47 lots available for sale at Kentish Drive, Shorewell Park; 32 lots at 28 Bowick Street, Wynyard; and 28 lots at Hales Street. These are available for affordable home purchase under the Tasmanian Government’s HomeShare program.

The Tasmanian Liberal Government is focused on matters Tasmanians really care about. Our 10-year, $1.5 billion housing package – the single largest housing investment in the State’s history – will build on existing initiatives and take further action to tackle affordable housing and homelessness issues, consolidating housing as one of the highest priorities of the Government.
