NSW police charge man after fatal New Lambton crash

A man has been charged following a fatal single-vehicle crash in Newcastle.

Shortly before 1pm yesterday (Tuesday 13 August 2019), emergency services were called to McCaffrey Drive, New Lambton Heights, after a Holden Statesman hit a power pole.

A nine-year-old girl was treated at the scene by an off-duty nurse, emergency services personnel and NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to John Hunter Children’s Hospital, where she died a short time later.

A 29-year-old woman was trapped in the vehicle before being taken to John Hunter Hospital where she remains in a serious condition.

The driver, a 25-year-old man, was taken to the Mater Hospital for mandatory testing.

He was later arrested and taken to Waratah Police Station.

He was charged with dangerous driving occasioning death, dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm, negligent driving occasioning death and negligent driving causing grievous bodily harm.

He was granted conditional bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court on Thursday 12 September 2019.

His driver’s licence was also suspended.

Investigations into the crash are continuing.
