NSW police charge man after fleeing pedestrian crash scene at Newtown

A man has been arrested after failing to stop when his vehicle hit a pedestrian in Newtown this morning.

About 11am (Tuesday 30 July 2019), a Hino 300 Flat-top truck was travelling south on King Street when it hit a set of traffic lights and struck an 87-year-old woman in a wheelchair who was on the footpath. A 65-year-old woman was also hit.

The 34-year-old male driver of the truck allegedly fled the scene and was chased by several passers-by, who caught up with him on Wilson Street.

He was arrested by officers from Inner West Police Area Command and was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for mandatory testing.

The 87-year-old woman was also taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a serious condition with suspected pelvic and limb fractures. The 65-year-old woman sustained minor bruising.

Officers from the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit attended the scene and commenced investigations into the cause of the crash.

At 3.30pm, the driver was conveyed to Newtown Police Station and was later charged with the following offences:

  • Dangerous driving occasioning grievous body harm – drive manner dangerous
  • Fail to stop and assist after vehicle impact causing grievous body harm
  • Negligent driving occasioning grievous body harm
  • Negligent driving
  • Fail to stop and assist after impact cause injury
  • Not give particulars to injured person.

He was refused bail and will appear at Parramatta Bail Court on Wednesday 31st July 2019.
