NSW police charge man after three officers injured during arrest at Waterloo

A man has been charged and three officers injured during an arrest in Waterloo yesterday.

Just before 7am (Wednesday 22 January 2020), emergency services were called to a unit on George Street after reports a man had armed himself with a knife during a domestic-related incident.

Officers from South Sydney Police Area Command attended and spoke with a 42-year-old man who had locked himself inside an apartment.

A short time later, the man exited the apartment and as police attempted to arrest him, he fled from the scene. He was pursued by police on foot and bicycle.

The man was arrested nearby in a garbage room on Pitt Street.

During the short pursuit, three officers were injured, including one male sergeant suffering four fractured ribs, a fractured right wrist and a dislocated shoulder; one male constable sustaining deep wounds to his left knee and a male leading senior constable sustaining a left leg injury.

All three officers were taken to St Vincent’s Hospital for treatment and will require further monitoring and surgery.

The 42-year old was taken to Mascot Police Station, before he was conveyed to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for assessment.

Upon release from hospital, the man was charged with contravene prohibition/restriction in AVO (domestic), stalk/intimidate intend fear physical etc harm (domestic), resist or hinder police officer in the execution of duty and prisoner escape from lawful custody.

He was refused bail and appeared in Central Local Court yesterday (Wednesday 22 January 2020) where he was granted conditional bail to appear at Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday 29 January 2020.
