NSW police charge man over serious assault of elderly man at Griffith

A man will face court today charged over the alleged serious assault of an elderly man in the state’s Murrumbidgee region yesterday.

Just after 4.15pm (Tuesday 6 September 2022), an 86-year-old man was walking along Kooyoo Street, Griffith, when he was approached and allegedly punched in the face by a man not known to him.

The younger man then allegedly grabbed the elderly man’s head in both hands before kneeing him in the face, causing the older man to fall backwards and hit his head on the concrete.

It will be further alleged the man then stomped on the elderly man’s face before fleeing.

A member of the public went to the man’s aid and emergency services were contacted.

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated him at the scene for facial and head injuries before he was taken to Griffith Base Hospital. He has since been released.

Officers attached to Murrumbidgee Police District commenced an investigation.

Following inquiries, police arrested a 26-year-old man at a nearby hotel on Banna Avenue, about 5.30pm that day.

He was taken to Griffith Police Station where he was charged with one count each of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and reckless grievous bodily harm.

The man was refused bail to appear in Griffith Local Court today (Wednesday 7 September 2022).

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident – or nearby businesses with CCTV – are urged to come forward and contact Griffith Police on 6969 4299.
