NSW police charge man over sexual assault of young girl at Goonellabah

A man will appear in court today charged over the alleged sexual assault of a young girl on the state’s Far North Coast earlier this week.

Yesterday (Wednesday 5 January 2022), police received reports that a six-year-old girl had been sexually assaulted by a man known to her.

The matter was referred to detectives at the State Crime Command’s Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad, who commenced an investigation.

Following extensive inquiries, a 66-year-old man was arrested by investigators – with the assistance of officers attached to Richmond Police District – just after 3pm yesterday at a home in Goonellabah.

He was taken to Lismore Police Station, where he was charged with aggravated break and enter commit serious indictable offence-people there, and sexual intercourse with child under the age of 10 years.

Police will allege in court the man gained entry into the girl’s home, then sexually abused her in the early hours of Monday 3 January 2022.

He was refused bail to appear before Lismore Local Court today (Thursday 6 January 2022).

The Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad is comprised of detectives who are specially trained to investigate matters against children and adults, including sexual assault, serious physical abuse, and extreme cases of neglect.
