NSW police charge two over illegal importation of tobacco worth $360,000

Two men have been charged with importing illegal tobacco products in Camperdown yesterday.

Officers attached to Redfern Region Enforcement Squad (RES), investigating the importation of illegal tobacco went to a self-storage facility at Booth Street, Camperdown, about 1.20pm (Wednesday 16 December 2020).

Police will allege two men loaded packages into the boot of a grey Audi, before leaving. Investigators stopped the vehicle on nearby Mallet Street, Camperdown, and seized an estimated 73kg of tobacco products from the boot of the vehicle.

Investigators will allege the products have an estimated potential street value of $360,000.

A 47-year-old man and a 23-year-old man were arrested and taken to Surry Hills Police Station where they were charged with import tobacco products with intent to defraud revenue.

They have been refused bail to appear in Central Local Court today (Thursday 17 December 2020).
