NSW police, emergency services embrace sports event

An event aimed at promoting a positive social and sporting experience for emergency service personnel across NSW will be held in October.

More than 2000 police and emergency services personnel throughout the state have so far registered to compete in the 33rd NSW Police & Emergency Services Games, which will be held in Wollongong on 19-24 October 2019.

NSW Police Games Chairman, Deputy Commissioner David Hudson APM, said the Games offer emergency services personnel the opportunity to come together in a relaxed environment and build camaraderie.

“Our personnel usually cross paths during times of trauma. The Games provide a social avenue to unite in a spirit of friendly rivalry,” Mr Hudson said.

The 2019 games is open to all NSW Police Force employees (sworn, unsworn and retired) and employees from other emergency services agencies, including for the first time the Nurses and Midwives Association of NSW. Retired and family members from each agency are also encouraged to take part.

“I encourage all personnel to embrace the games, enjoy the competition, renew acquaintances and make new friends. It’s an event not to be missed,” Mr Hudson said.

“With 43 sports on offer, ranging from angling, aquathon, cycling (road and mountain biking) to Oztag, paintball, touch football and water polo, there is bound to be something for everyone. The emphasis is on participation.”

Mr Hudson said it is the third consecutive year the event is being hosted by Wollongong. “Wollongong boasts a diverse range of excellent sporting facilities and we are extremely excited to be returning.”

He thanked event sponsors Destination Wollongong, Wollongong City Council, NSW Police Council of Sport, Sonder Australia, Police Bank, Struddy’s Merchandise Co and the Police Association of NSW.

The NSW games is a forerunner to the 2020 Australasian Police & Emergency Services Games which will be held in Wollongong on 17-24 October 2020 and which is expected to attract more than 5000 competitors from throughout Australia and the Asia-Pacific.
