NSW police lay charges over carjacking, stabbing and crash

A man has been charged over an alleged carjacking and assault in Sydney’s south last week, which left the driver with serious injuries.

About 9pm last Tuesday (9 July 2019), a man allegedly got into a silver Toyota Corolla, which was stationary on Ocean Street, Kogarah, and threatened the driver, demanding she drive him to Maroubra.

When 52-year-old woman attempted to flee her vehicle on Trafalgar Street, Brighton Le Sands, the man allegedly assaulted her with a multi-tool knife, before getting into the driver’s seat and driving away.

Members of the public came to the woman’s aid before she was taken by NSW Ambulance paramedics to St George Hospital for treatment to stab wounds and lacerations to the face and neck. She has since been released from hospital.

A short time later, the silver Corolla collided with two other vehicles at the intersection of Crawford Road and President Avenue, and then crashed into a brick wall outside a unit block on President Avenue.

The man was arrested at the scene and taken to St George Hospital for treatment to head injuries, where he remains under police guard.

Following inquiries, the 24-year-old man was charged with take/detain person with intent to obtain advantage occasion actual bodily harm, wound person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, aggravated assault with intent to take/drive motor vehicle-armed with weapon, destroy or damage property, drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous, and licence expired 2 years or more.

The Pyrmont man was refused bail and is expected to appear at Sutherland Local Court via bedside hearing later today (Wednesday 17 July 2019).
