NSW police vs Firies in 9/11 Memorial Rugby Day

More than 80 police and fire brigade personnel will descend on Belmore Sports Ground today to kick off the annual 9/11 Memorial Rugby Day match.

The event has been held for the past six years to commemorate emergency services personnel that have given their lives will performing their duties.

The Wallopers are hosting this year’s 9/11 Memorial Rugby Day. President of the Wallopers, Detective Sergeant Anthony Hyndes, encouraged locals to come along as spectators to watch the two matches.

In the over 35s class, the Police Wallopers will take on the Fire Brigade Golden Oldies at 1pm.

The NSW Police Force Wedgetails will challenge the NSW Fire Brigade in the open men’s category at 3pm.

“Make no mistake the competition is fierce. First and foremost, we head on to the field to commemorate those that have lost their lives serving the community, but it doesn’t deter us from giving it our all,” Detective Sergeant Anthony Hyndes said.

“Locals and visitors are more than welcome to join us to watch the matches. It’s free entry and there will be food and drinks available. We’d love to see spectators cheering on the sidelines and showing their support for emergency services,” he said.

The event is sponsored by Canterbury Council and Canterbury Bankstown Leagues Club.

East Hills MP, Wendy Lindsay will present the trophy to the winning team for the Golden Oldies category at 2.45pm. Media are invited to attend.

“Emergency Services personnel normally come together as they perform their critical roles during times of trauma. This match will see these brothers in arms meet on the field in the spirit of friendly rivalry,” Ms Lindsay said.

All fund-raising from today’s event is provided to Kookaburra Kids, a charity dedicated to supporting kids living in families affected by mental health. To find out more about Kookaburra Kids, visit: kookaburrakids.org.au.
