A man has been arrested after he allegedly attempted to evade Police on a stolen push bike in Lynfield this morning.
Just after 2am, Police received a report from a member of the public who believed they saw a person with a firearm.
Auckland City West Area Prevention Manager, Inspector Wayne Kitcher, says upon receiving the report units approached the occupant inside a vehicle on Hillsborough Road.
“The man has refused to exit the vehicle and has then fled from Police at speed.
“The Police Eagle helicopter has then located the vehicle stopped on Orsova Place and alerted staff on the ground.
“An armed approach was made to the vehicle, which was found to be empty.
“Eagle has then observed a person on a bicycle leaving the area and heading into a nearby reserve.”
Inspector Kitcher says Delta, the Police dog unit, was deployed to assist and the person was quickly taken into custody.
“Delta engaged with the person, who was then transported to hospital for treatment of a minor wound.
“While no firearm was located, Police take these types of reports very seriously.
“Our teams will continue to work hard to hold offenders to account for these types of reckless behaviours that put our community at risk.
“Not only did they place themselves in danger by continuing to flee Police, but they put a large number of others in danger too.”
A 30-year-old man will appear in Auckland District Court today charged with unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, burglary, failing to stop, dangerous driving, driving while disqualified and resisting Police.
