Officers’ bravery recognised at Valour Medal Ceremony

Minister for Police and Corrective Services and Minister for Fire and Emergency Services The Honourable Mark Ryan

Minister for Police and Corrective Services and Minister for Fire and Emergency Services the Honourable Mark Ryan MP today joined Commissioner Katarina Carroll to present Queensland Police Valour Medals to five former Queensland Police Service (QPS) members for their bravery during a 1987 fatal shooting.

On the morning of 29 July 1987, members of the Tactical Response Group (TRG) raided a house at Virginia to apprehend an escaped prisoner.

Shots were fired through the bedroom door, wounding senior constable Peter Kidd who later passed away in hospital. Another officer was severely wounded before the offender was shot dead on scene.

Commissioner Carroll said that at the time, members of the TRG received awards for bravery, however the five former members of the TRG receiving Valour Medals today had not been previously acknowledged.

“Today we rightfully recognise and celebrate the bravery shown by these five gentlemen on a day that tragically took the life of one of their colleagues,” Commissioner Carroll said.

“On that day in 1987, these former QPS members demonstrated great commitment, bravery, service and resilience, among many other qualities, making them incredible police officers.

“You can each be proud of the career you had with the QPS and we thank you for your service.”

Minister Ryan acknowledged the dedication of the police officers receiving the prestigious medal.

“Queensland Police Valour Medals are awarded to officers who perform an act of exceptional bravery in hazardous circumstances,” Minister Ryan said.

“Former Sergeant First Class John Carnes, Former Constable First Class Donald Green, Former Plain Clothes Constable Alan Smith, Former Sergeant Second Class John Watt and Former Plain Clothes Constable First Class Robert Stone, when faced with this situation you each showed enormous bravery, proving your commitment to the Queensland community.

“Congratulations to each of you who have received awards today.”
