Following extensive community consultation a Draft Disability Access and Inclusion Plan and Action Plan was presented and endorsed by the Council at the Ordinary Council Meeting on February 15. The draft plans have now been placed on public exhibition for the next 28 days.
The Draft Action Plan sets out what Council will do over the next four years to make the Federation Council area more accessible and inclusive. This Plan will assist in ensuring that people with a disability can access the same services and supports that the rest of the community can access.
The plan has four focus areas:
1. Develop Positive Community Attitudes and Behaviours
2. Create Liveable Communities
3. Support Access to Meaningful Employment
4. Improve Access to Mainstream Services through Better Systems and Processes
Federation Council Mayor, Cr Pat Bourke said Council was pleased to present the final plans to the community, to complement the extensive consultation that has taken place.’
“Through the creation of these plans, Council now has a solid framework to guide us in supporting not only our residents with a disability, but family members or carers of a person with a disability,” he said.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved thus far for their contribution and Council looks forward with anticipation to reviewing the final plans once the public exhibition process has taken place.”
As part of the drafting process Council spoke with people with disability, their families and carers, disability sector professionals and the Council’s Disability Access and Inclusion Committee. As well as internal consultation with areas such as facilities, human resources, infrastructure and project planning departments. This feedback has informed the Plan’s actions.
