Open day to teach families how to go green at home

Give the whole family green thumbs this weekend at the Rowes Bay Sustainability Centre’s open day (Sunday 17 October).

The free fun day this Sunday will help young folks and the young at heart learn about the small things that can make a big difference to your home and garden.

Community Health, Safety and Environmental Sustainability Committee chairperson Maurie Soars said this was the perfect event for both children and adults to head to.

“Rowes Bay Sustainability Centre is a great resource to see how practical changes around your house and garden can have a big impact on power use and water efficiency,” Cr Soars said.

“Council has a strong focus on educating residents about how we can be more efficient with our water consumption here in Townsville, as we’re in the dry tropics and this has an impact on our water supply.

“By coming along to the Rowes Bay Sustainability Centre’s open day, you’ll be able to learn easy tips and tricks to save water while still having a lush garden and a comfortable home.

“If you bring in your old hose-end sprinkler, we’ll even be able to exchange it for a new one on the spot.”

Cr Soars said there were plenty of activities lined up for the day.

“We’ll have Ranger Dan at the Sustainability Centre with his wildlife show, there will be a free sausage sizzle for visitors, and we’ll have talks from local experts,” he said.

“This is a free day out for the whole family so make sure you come on down to learn a thing or two – if you’re lucky you’ll also leave with a free native plant to include in your own garden at home.”

The Rowes Bay Sustainability Centre Open Day runs from 10am to 2pm this Sunday 17 October. Entry and participation is free.
