Although putting on a seatbelt should be second nature for motorists, more than 60 drivers were provided with a one-on-one reminder of that fact by police over the weekend.
SA Police ran Operation Belt Up on Friday, Saturday and Sunday to bring attention to the importance of seatbelt use by all drivers and passengers in motor vehicles.
Over the three-day, state-wide road safety operation a total of 64 drivers were stopped by police for failing to belt up.
Superintendent Bob Gray, the officer in charge of the Traffic Support Branch, said seatbelts were a simple, yet effective tool, that help to save lives on the state’s roads.
He reminded motorists that Operation Home Safe – a high visibility operation focused on all the offences linked with fatal and serious road crashes – is in force throughout July.
“Through Home Safe police will continue to look at motorists seatbelt use, along with the other issues linked with the ‘Fatal Five’,” he said.
“Police will be paying particular attention to drivers who may be under the influence of alcohol or drugs; speeding; distracted or other dangerous driving.
“We want to make sure drivers, motorbike riders, cyclists and pedestrians all think about their behaviour and how it impacts other road users.
“Road safety is everyone’s responsibility and we want everyone to get home safe.”
