Northern Territory Police have launched Operation Sherman, targeting domestic violence order (DVO) compliance.
Domestic violence is a real, frightening and ongoing problem for many members of the community. Statistics show that as many as one in six Australian women will be a victim of domestic violence at some point in their lives. Furthermore the number of domestic violence incidents reported to police has increased and that in 2019/2020, year to date, breaches of DVOs have increased by 17.47%.
Operation Sherman is a Darwin-based multiagency operation focussing on education, prevention, reduction and response to domestic violence. Police are working with other government agencies and stakeholder groups to deliver Sherman.
Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Warren Scott said, “Police will be undertaking compliance checks on people under domestic violence orders. Part of the process will be educating the parties involved and providing support services to assist the family unit as a whole.
“While the majority of DV victims are women, it is important to note that men and children are often victims as well.
“I urge everyone in community to be safe this festive season and to look out for one another. Fixing domestic violence in our community needs everyone to help and say ‘No More’ to domestic violence.”
