Optus brings mobile coverage to Black River for first time

50th tower to be switched on in North Queensland

Optus has switched on a new tower in Black River, bringing improved 4G coverage to the Townsville region.

The new site will deliver dedicated Optus coverage in the suburb of Black River as well as the surrounding area of Jensen and Beach Holm for the first-time enabling residents, businesses and visitors to make and receive calls, texts and access mobile data.

Optus North Queensland Territory General Manager, Dave Morrissey said this site reflects Optus commitment to the Townsville region, with the Black River site being the 50th tower switched on in North Queensland in four years.

The fact that we have invested in and built 50 sites in North Queensland in the last four years is testament to our commitment to building a mobile network across not just built up cities but also surrounding towns in this region. We firmly believe that competition is not only good for the economy, but also good for the customer with this new site providing customers with choice and better value.

During the last four years we have worked closely with the local community and councils to identify areas that have required enhanced mobile coverage in major centres such as Townsville and Cairns as well as ensuring reliable network performance along the major roads that run between them.

We know how important access to reliable mobile coverage is to the people that live and work in these communities and we are proud to now be able to deliver this for the people of Black River and Jensen.

Townsvilles Deputy Mayor Councillor, Les Walker welcomed the news and extended coverage for residents of the city.

Townsville is a strong, growing regional capital and the council is highly supportive of investment that will deliver expanded coverage and services for our residents, particularly during times of natural disasters, Councillor Walker said.

Optus continues to invest in its network to improve coverage, reliability and speed across its Australian mobile network, with the new tower in Black River providing a competitive telecommunications alternative for local residents and businesses.
