AMES, Iowa – Construction crews are ready to connect the East Gateway Bridge over University Boulevard, which will require lane restrictions and overnight closures. The $10 million bridge project will provide a safe pedestrian route between Jack Trice Stadium and game-day parking areas east of the stadium.

Starting June 27, Iowa State University Facilities Planning and Management (FPM) and city of Ames engineers will restrict traffic to one lane in both directions for approximately four weeks. Crews will close University Boulevard overnight from June 28-July 1. Below is the schedule, which is subject to change based on weather:

  • Single-lane closures (both directions): 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. June 27-July 22
  • Road closures: 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. June 28-July 1

Overnight traffic will be rerouted along South Fourth Street, Beach Avenue and Mortensen Road (see map below). Motorists traveling north on University Boulevard will be able to access South 16th during the overnight closures.

The athletics department is paying for the quarter-mile long, elevated walkway with donor funds. FPM expects it will be completed in late July and open for Iowa State’s first home football game on Sept. 3. The project also includes a sidewalk outside the northeast corner of the stadium to connect the north plaza area and promote year-round use of the bridge.
