A man has been charged following a police pursuit in the state’s Far West overnight.
Officers attached to Barrier Police District attempted to stop a station wagon for the purposes of roadside testing, on Mercury Street, Broken Hill about 3am today (Tuesday 8 September 2026).
When the driver allegedly failed to stop as directed, a pursuit was initiated.
The pursuit continued through several streets including Gypsum Street, Crystal Street, Menindee Road, Oxide Street and others, with the vehicle allegedly travelling at speeds of up to 130km/hr in signposted 50km/hr speed zones.
The vehicle stopped at the corner of Bromide Street and Wolfram Street, with the driver fleeing on foot.
Police spoke to the female passenger who was assessed by NSW Ambulance paramedics for treatment of shock before being released without charge.
Following inquiries, police arrested a 42-year-old man at a home on Mica Street, Broken Hill, shortly after.
He was taken to Broken Hill Police Station and was subject to an oral fluid test, which allegedly returned a positive result for methamphetamine. The sample will be subject to further analysis.
During a search of the man, officers allegedly located an amount of crystal methylamphetamine.
The man was charged with five offences,
·Police pursuit – not stop – drive at speed
·Class A motor vehicle exceed speed greater than 45 km/h – estimated
·Drive motor vehicle during disqualification period
·Drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous, and
·Possess prohibited drug.
He was refused bail to face Bail Division Court 4 today (Tuesday 8 September 2026).
