Oxfam has congratulated the Executive Lead of its First Peoples Program Ngarra Murray on her appointment as Co-Chair of the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria.

Oxfam Australia’s Chief Executive Lyn Morgain said the First Peoples’ Assembly was an important and representative body for Victoria’s First Peoples playing a critical role in the negotiation of Treaty and truth-telling.

“The First Peoples of Victoria will be well served by Ngarra’s recognised leadership and stewardship capability and we wish her every success in this important role,” she said.

“Ngarra has made a significant contribution to the work of Oxfam for close to a decade. We have been truly privileged to have such a highly-regarded trailblazer leading our work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

“Ngarra has played a critical role in the success of our Straight Talk program, supporting close to 1000 First Nations women to engage with our political systems, and forged important connections globally – within and outside Oxfam – with other First Nations leaders.

“She also provided inspiring leadership around the Close the Gap campaign as well as other important policy and influencing initiatives.”
