A probationary driver had his licence suspended after allegedly being caught drink driving, speeding and carrying too many passengers in West Wodonga on Saturday morning.
Wodonga Uniform members were patrolling when they observed a white Toyota Landcruiser perform a quick left turn onto Felltimber Creek Road about 3.35am on 12 December.
Officers followed the car and observed it allegedly accelerate to 140km/h in a 60km zone.
Police were shocked when they intercepted the car and found a P1 driver behind the wheel with three passengers, exceeding the number of permitted passengers for a P1 licence holder.
The 18-year-old driver underwent a breath test before being taken to a police station and returning an alleged evidentiary reading of 0.081.
The man had his licence immediately suspended for 13 months and received penalty notices for:
• exceed peer passenger restriction – at a cost of $496 and 3 demerit points
• exceed prescribed concentration of alcohol – at a cost of $496 and 6 demerit points
• exceed speed limit by 45km/h or more – at a cost of $826
Leading Senior Constable Neil Hobbs said speed, alcohol and inexperience are the classic ingredients for disaster.
“It frightens me that a young person was speeding on country roads while under the influence and carrying three friends,” LSC Hobbs said.
“With such poor driver behaviour, it is extremely lucky no one was injured or killed.”
