P-plater charged after pursuit and crash, NSW

A P-plate driver has been charged after crashing during a pursuit with police in Sydney’s south-west overnight.

Just before 11.15pm (Wednesday 6 May 2020), officers from Campbelltown City Police Area Command were patrolling the Macquarie Fields area when they saw a Nissan Pulsar travelling on Harold Street, in excess of the signposted 60km/h zone.

As police conducted a U-turn, the Nissan turned into Evelyn Street and then Bensley Road, failing to indicate.

A pursuit was initiated after it failed to stop and allegedly accelerated away at an estimated speed of 100km/h in a signposted 60km/h zone.

At the end of Bensley Road, the Nissan left the road and rolled into bushland, coming to rest on its roof, trapping the driver. Four passengers got out and fled on foot.

The driver, a 21-year-old man, was freed by police and arrested.

An extensive search was conducted, with the assistance of the Dog Unit and the four passengers were later located, with scratches and minor injuries.

The Leumeah man was taken to Campbelltown Police Station where he was charged with police pursuit – not stop – drive recklessly and drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous.

He was granted conditional bail to appear at Campbelltown Local Court on Tuesday 21 July 2020.
