Three probationary licence holders, including one with a suspended licence, have said goodbye to their vehicles after being caught by Taskforce Achilles officers over the weekend for dangerous driving and speeding offences in Melbourne’s northern suburbs.
At about 7pm on Friday night, officers observed a motorbike performing ‘wheelies’ and driving dangerously in Tullamarine near the Melbourne Airport.
The driver, a 22-year-old probationary licence holder, was intercepted who allegedly claimed he was just practicing.
The motorbike was impounded for 30 days at a cost of $878 and the 22-year-old man is expected to be charged on summons with intentional loss of traction.
Shortly after at 11pm, officers were again in the vicinity of the Airport when they observed a Ford Focus travelling at 168km/h on the Tullamarine Freeway.
Officers tracked the vehicle to a petrol station on Bell Street in Pascoe Vale South where it was intercepted.
Police observed the tyres on the vehicle being worn down to the cording.
The driver, an 18-year-old male on a probationary licence, allegedly told police he was running late to meet friends. The vehicle was impounded for 30 days at a cost of $873.
The 18-year-old is expected to be charged on summons with driving at a dangerous speed, exceed speed limit, driving an unsafe vehicle and other traffic offences. He has also lost his licence for a mandatory 12 months.
On Saturday evening, officers intercepted a BMW 335i in Fawkner after observing a male driver using his mobile phone.
The male driver, a 20-year-old, had a suspended probationary licence.
Police searched the vehicle and located approximately 50 grams of cannabis, knuckle dusters, $4,700 in cash and fake identification.
The male driver and his 16-year-old female passenger were both arrested and are expected to be charged on summons with drug and traffic offences.
The car was impounded for 30 days a cost of $873.
Operation Achilles has been responsible for charging more than 360 hoon drivers and impounding over 375 hoon vehicles since it commenced in February 2021.
