City of Parramatta Council is encouraging locals to band together and pitch in for this year’s Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday 1 March.
Now celebrating its 30th anniversary, Clean Up Australia Day is the nation’s largest community-based mobilisation event. In 2019, more than 680,000 volunteers removed over 15,000 ute loads of rubbish from the 6,901 registered locations across the country.
City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Bob Dwyer said Clean Up Australia Day is an excellent opportunity for the community to spark change by helping to remove rubbish from our local neighbourhoods.
“We are so privileged to live in our beautiful city, and this event serves as a valuable reminder that we need to look after it, by cleaning up and taking care of our parks, roadsides and waterways.”
“It is important that we all work together to preserve our environment, and reduce our waste all year round.”
Australians are currently creating about 2.5 million tonnes of plastic waste every year. Only 12 per cent of these plastics are being recycled, with the rest impacting bush reserves, oceans, and public spaces around the country.
Since 1990, more than 17.7 million Australians have participated in a Clean Up event, dedicating more than 35 million hours of volunteer time to activities benefiting our environment.
“We would like to see as many people as possible get involved in this great initiative. So far, 56 groups in the City of Parramatta Local Government Area have signed up to participate on the day,” Cr Dwyer said.
