Party safe and have a plan to get home

A new campaign is encouraging Canberrans to celebrate and party safely.

Canberra is a safe city and we want people to have a great time and end the night in one piece.

Today I launched the 2019-2020 ‘What Would They Think’ campaign with the acting Chief Police Officer Michael Chew, ACTAS Chief Officer Howard Wren and Canberra Hospital Director of Emergency Medicine Greg Hollis.

Everyone has a role in ensuring ACT venues and roads are safe. This festive season consider how you want your night to go and how things can end badly if you don’t have a plan in place.

At worst, you could injure yourself or someone else, end up in court or wake up in the emergency department. Nobody wants to let down their families, friends and colleagues by losing their license or causing an altercation.

Be sure to have a plan to get home, look after your friends and when in doubt take the safest option whether that’s taking a cab home, saying no to another drink or asking for assistance.

We’re also reminding Canberrans that driving under the influence of illicit substances is against the law and the ACT Government’s cannabis legislation will not change this when it comes into effect early next year.

ACT Policing officers will be patrolling licenced premises and entertainment precincts and Canberra’s roads targeting alcohol and drug related incidents, anti-social behaviour and impaired driving.

ACT Policing will continue to run the campaign beyond the festive season through to the end of next year.
