A recent audit of pet registrations across the Darwin municipality has shown that 60% of all Darwin households own a pet and that more than 93% are registered.
The audit took place over 13 weeks and included 9,540 properties. Restrictions brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic meant that not all Darwin properties could be included in the audit.
Some interesting statistics from suburbs included in the audit –
Leanyer has the highest number of registered cats at 113 across 1263 properties
Fannie Bay has the highest number of registered dogs with 329 dogs across 191 properties
Brinkin and Nakara had the least number of cats and dogs per property at only 29 registered cats and 111 registered dogs across 803 properties
Marrara recorded no unregistered animals.
“Although COVID-19 impacted on the completion of the audit, there have been some very positive results recorded,” said Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis.
“The audit has given us a really good snapshot of pet ownership and pet registration across Darwin, helping to inform our marketing efforts.”
“Right now there are 9,689 pets registered across Darwin with the audit showing 701 unregistered pets.”
“We encourage all pet owners to be responsible and register their pets.”
Pet registration fees are used to provide Animal Management and Animal Education Services to the community, including a free pet care help line, free microchipping days, pound facilities and the return of lost animals. Pet registration is due on 1 September and fees are significantly reduced if pets are de-sexed. All pets must to be microchipped in order to registered.
