Pioneer Lake is now re-open to the public for recreational use and fishing, following the successful decommissioning of Pioneer Dam.
Minister for Parks, Nick Duigan, said the project ensures the long-term safety and sustainability of the area while restoring access for visitors and the local community.
“Pioneer Dam was built more than a century ago to support historic mining activities in the region. Now this much loved-community area can be enjoyed for generations to come,” Minister Duigan said
“We are delighted to welcome visitors back to Pioneer Lake after restoring access to this beautiful part of north-east Tasmania.”
The dam was decommissioned to protect public safety and ensure the area can continue to be enjoyed.
“The project was delivered ahead of schedule and I thank everyone involved for their commitment to delivering this important work safely and efficiently,” Minister Duigan said.
The reopening means keen anglers will once again be able to enjoy this popular trout fishery.
“Pioneer Lake is one of North-East Tasmania’s most popular trout fisheries. The area has been stocked with rainbow trout during the closure ensuring excellent fishing opportunities from day one,” Minister Duigan said.
“We acknowledge the patience and understanding of the local community during the temporary closure.
“With the works now complete, we look forward to seeing people once again enjoying Pioneer Lake and the surrounding environment.”
The Tasmanian Government acknowledged Dorset Council and the Pioneer Lake Advocacy Group for their collaboration, and thanked Shaw Contracting for delivering the project.
Inspections and monitoring will continue over coming months as part of the site’s rehabilitation and re-vegetation program.
